The Virtual Tour of the Quad (2000-2008)

When the University of Illinois first contacted me, they expressed their admiration of my website, stating that it had a "strong sense of community spirit" and hoped that I could help them create a new addition to the U of I website--a "virtual tour" of the Quad. I agreed that such an online tour would be an ideal way to showcase the University and enlisted the creative services of Mark Otnes at the Sterling Creative Group.

Mark did it all. He hired students as tour guide models, photographed them at every building on the Quad and created an informative, interactive and entertaining tour for the U of I website. When it first went "LIVE" on the Internet in 2000, a ceremony commemorating the event was held, and the tour's first moments were projected up onto a huge screen for all to enjoy (see photo above). The approximate value of this cyberspace gift was well over $8,000. The entire ceremony was covered by the press and a nice article appeared in the Daily Illini a few days later (see at right).

Eight years later in 2008, the Quad Tour was removed and replaced with updated information as the University completely revamped their website. But in terms of the Internet, an 8-year run was very good indeed!
